Promised Land State Park
Greentown PA
Tucked high on the Pocono Plateau in Greentown, PA, Promised Land State Park has quickly become one of those places we find ourselves coming back to — sometimes planned, sometimes completely on a “wild card.”
Our first stay here was a single overnight at Site #107, a 30/50-amp electric-only site (with full hook-up sites also available throughout the campground). It was our first experience staying at a park built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), and honestly, we left wishing we had booked more time. From the historic stone and timber structures to the thoughtful layout of the campground, there’s a lot of history woven into this park’s foundation.
A Park Built on History
Established in 1905 as one of Pennsylvania’s earliest state parks, Promised Land spans nearly 3,000 acres and sits at about 1,800 feet in elevation. During the 1930s, the CCC helped shape much of what visitors still enjoy today — constructing roads, cabins, trails, and recreational areas that continue to serve campers decades later. You can feel that craftsmanship throughout the park.
Campsites & Camping Experience
The campground offers a wide variety of sites, from rustic to electric and full hook-up options. Whether you’re planning ahead or rolling in after hours like we did on our second visit, there’s a good chance you’ll find something that works.
Yes — our second stay was completely unplanned.
In true Wandering Bee fashion, we scrapped our original campground reservation and pulled what we call a “wild card.” No reservations. No pre-booked site. Just rolling in after the office had closed and hoping for the best. Thankfully, the camp gods smiled down on us. We quickly found the perfect overnight spot — and even better, we were greeted by the sweetest camp neighbors: a momma deer and her babies wandering peacefully through the trees.
It was one of those quiet campground moments that reminds you why you RV.
And while we try to highlight the big adventures, we would be remiss not to mention something equally important in RV life — this is officially Mr. WanderB’s favorite dump station. The water pressure is fantastic, and everything slopes perfectly toward the drain (you fellow RVers understand how important that is 💩).
Recreation & Outdoor Adventure
Promised Land State Park is centered around two scenic lakes — Promised Land Lake (422 acres) and Lower Lake (173 acres) — offering nearly 13 miles of shoreline. The park is packed with activities:
Hiking on roughly 50 miles of trails
Mountain biking
Kayaking and canoeing
Fishing for bass, pickerel, trout, and more
Swimming at two sandy beaches (seasonal)
Wildlife watching
The surrounding Delaware State Forest expands your adventure options even further.
Every time we stay here, we realize we need to slow down and spend more time exploring. Between the lakes, the trail system, the history, and the peaceful forest setting, this park deserves more than just an overnight stop.
Why It’s Worth Adding to Your List
Promised Land isn’t just a convenient stop in northeastern Pennsylvania — it’s a destination. It offers:
A wide selection of campsites
Strong RV infrastructure
Rich CCC history
Beautiful lakeside scenery
Abundant wildlife
Four-season recreation
And for us, it’s also a reminder that sometimes the best campground experiences happen when you least expect them.
We’ve only scratched the surface of this region of Pennsylvania — usually just driving through on our way south — but Promised Land State Park has officially earned a return trip on our calendar.
If you visit, maybe plan ahead.
Or maybe… leave room for a wild card.
